Azur De

beautiful african american female woman girl model ben miller photography

Thanks to Azur De and Michelle for a great beauty shoot yesterday.  Azur De is repped by Daniel Hoff Agency here in LA, and is a great actress and model.  We did some headshots and other stuff for her portfolio, and some makeup shots for Bay Area Makeup Artist Magazine.

More Fun Beauty Shots

Another from the park series last weekend.  Shot with a Canon 5d and ring flash.  These girls were too much fun – I took WAY too many photos!

Verdugo Park Lifestyle Shoot

lifestyle teen autumn leaves images by ben miller photography

Thanks again to Jessica and her friends for a fun shoot in the park.  I was much happier with this leaves look than the last time i tried it.  These girls had so much energy and life, and were truly fun to be around.  I hope this shows in the photos…

Ode to Bresson

Another shot from the session with Mila this week.  This setup is an ode to legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose images have always brought me inspiration.  The styling is courtesy of the Lily Wang shop, except for the boots, which the model happened to bring.

Rain Shoot

Thanks to Mila and Michele yesterday for a great shoot in the rain.  We did a series of shots around downtown.  This one was taken in an access tunnel to the LA river.

Always in Motion

Here is a final shot from that park shoot – the model is Elizabeth.  Only this one was taken in Michele’s building – a great old subway terminal building in downtown.  This shot specifically is from the creepy attic.  I love images with motion – I hope to incorporate it more as a trend in my work.

Autumn Leaves

Another shot from the park series.  Here in LA the leaves don’t all fall from the trees, so you can create the autumn look from august to February!

More From The Park

Another shot from the park series.  Created just before the sun went down.

Lifestyle Shoot in a Burbank Park

The next few shots I post will be from a lifestyle concept shoot I produced and shot in December.  I selected 5 models and shot them interacting in the park, focusing on a fun, carefree feeling.  We also did some shots in the makeup artist (Michele Des Groseillers) classic downtown loft building.

LongJing Tea Fields, Central China

the longjing tea fields in china near guilin

This shot is being entered in a couple of competitions.  It is of a small village set amongst the tea fields of LongJing in central China.  It is one of the most beautiful places in the country, and I think very symbolic of the typical Chinese landscape.

Gehry / Disney Building

Here is another example of the concept I was talking about yesterday.  Except in this case, the shot is of one of the most famous buildings in LA.  I snapped this in the afternoon, and thought it was especially appropriate to use this collage technique with this building, which is itself a bunch of pieces jammed together.  Thats it for now – off to norcal for an assisting job for 2 days.

The Mrs.

Lately, I have been really enjoying putting together large collages from smaller images, and not trying to conceal that it is a collection of images.  It gives a fun handmade look and is especially great for large prints, as it gives you a ton of resolution.  This was a quick shot done with lilys 3 year old point and shoot set on its lowest resolution – we biked around downtown today, and saw the LA river, in all its dried up glory.  The grafitti behind her is done by Philip Lumbang – who recently had a great write up in Giant Robot magazine, and is some of the only street grafitti that I like.

New Year. New Resolution.

Apologies all.  I realize it has been 4 weeks since my last post.  I have been really busy with work – shooting, assisting, and coming up with new concepts for the future.  My resolutions for 2010 are as follows: 1. post to my blog 3+ times per week.  2. Shoot something new every day.  3. Exercise.  Yoga, soccer, hiking, and otherwise.  4. Spend more time in the great outdoors.  5. Take part in a serious expedition somewhere off the map.  6.  Shoot more for charitable causes.  7. Make an east coast trip.

So, with this post I am getting off to a good start on resolutions 1-4.  This is a shot of the region of the Angeles national forest that was devastated by the Station Fire.  It is surprisingly stark, minimalist, and beautiful.  Unfortunately, it is off limits to hiking for the moment, but vistas like this can still be seen from the road.

Glendale Wilderness

small dog on hike in the woods

I joined Brian Faini and some others for a hike on saturday in the hills above Glendale.  Notable landmarks included burned out old trucks and a dead puppy.  Ya, it was that kind of a day.

Dogs can be Jewish, too

So I did some fun headshots the other day with this actress Mei.  It turns out that not only is her dog an actor as well, but Jewish to boot!  See the book in the photo? Only in LA – I love it!

Venice Beach

a cute basset hound dog relaxing lounging at the beach

Lily and I took advantage of the long weekend and fit in a trip to the beach.  It rained the day before, so it was a day of crystal blue skies.

Sunday Shoot in downtown LA

african american male fashion in a gorgeous black suit

I had a great time Sunday afternoon shooting Eddington Howard, a model and fashion guru based in east LA.  We shot in downtown LA in an abandoned landscaped of light industry.  Next, headed up to Sonoma for Thanksgiving.  Mmmm.

Travel images coming soon

green and red chinese mailbox on wood wall near shanghai china

Here is a previously un-posted shot from my time in China – just a simple mailbox, but I love the color palette.  I am working on adding some travel images to my website, hopefully will be done next week.  It has taken a lot longer than anticipated because I have been getting a lot of jobs already.  Stay tuned…
